<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Each and every occasion people all over the world ridiculed England. When you put that behind and move to the present day, England fans now can proudly say the following.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"Remember the England"</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The rugby world cup semi-final was one for the ages. All of England will never forget that game for a long time. Having crashed out from their own party at home four years earlier, this was the moment waiting to happen for them. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2003 England won the world cup, but they never faced All Blacks in the knockout stages. Even reaching the finals in 2007. This was the perfect opportunity to grab a world cup in style and boy they did it. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">At the beginning of the game, NBC commentator was comparing All blacks relaxed body language to England's nervous look. In the end, it was not the nervousness, a determination to go all the way. This was a proper win. It was not a one that France stole in 2007 Quater final against All Black's. England had most of the possession. Did they keep it close and made the game boring? Hell, NO. They just spread the ball wide at every given opportunity. It was a masterclass.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What did win the game for England? One of the best defensive performances I ever saw. All blacks were kept for a single-digit score and it came through miscommunication in the line out in England danger zone. Other than that England was disciplined, never gave away poor penalties.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Even though scoreline would suggest the game was a close one but in reality, England dominated. You will rarely see All blacks getting dominated in a game, but this was a one for the ages. <span style="background-color: white; color: rgba(0 , 0 , 0 , 0.87);">Maro Itoje and </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">sam underhill were outstanding along with the rest of the pack. Watch the highlights again how they turned over the possession at the breakdown and won the penalties. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">All blacks were looking to penetrate the defense through the entire game, but they never could. Even the flamboyant Sonny Bill Williams could not create any plays with his silky backhand passes. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Rugby community must be still in shock, but this was no fluke. Eddie Jones pulled out one of the best and memorable victories in the history of the rugby world cup history.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Was really excited for CR & FC at the beginning of the season. It stayed until before the 5th week against Havelock SC. But yet again for the umpteenth time CR just proved to me that it is really hard to be a fan of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me explain my title first. I used to have 1997 make Toyota Caldina. Very spacious and comfortable, family friendly vehicle. Yes, the damn diesel automobile took me every where. Here comes the BUT. But every month or so I would be doing some repair. I would fix the issue and would be happy. Always the joy was short lived. The very next month I would be at the garage trying to fix some thing else.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having being a CR fan almost for 20 years now, they remind me of my poor old car. If they have good forwards, then they would be lacking backs. Or rather a fly half, who could distribute the ball and set his back line in motion. Of the all years Fazil "the legend" Marija haunted CR and tore apart defenses, I believe young Tarinda Ratwatte is the only one that could think of who played that role well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yes, we had Nigel Ratwatte for brief period, loyal servant Ashan De Costa and kicking and drop goal specialist Dev Anand donned the red jersey. But to me Nigel is the only one I liked at least a bit. No offence to others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now we are suddenly looking embarrassing with forwards which guys like Pavithra Fernando, Shamly Nawaz and current trainer Lewke wondering what happened to that legacy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So coming back to the season, CR got some very good players in transfer window. Dulanjana Wijesinha, Shehan Dias and Kevin "Kutti" Dixon and not to forget young sensations, JD and GC. With close quarter victories over CH and Navy increased the hopes before good game against Police. Had high hopes on Kandy game, still felt really proud after the game. Yes, there is no hiding the fact that forwards were out played. But felt really proud how they still fought, where they led 14 - 7 at one time and again were close 26 - 22.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now back to the Havies game. CR started with positional change that I am unable to understand. Tarinda Ratwatte was shifted to outside center to accommodate Chanaka Chandimal. This is a move that proved to be not working in the last season as well. If I was involved in CR coaching department, I would not never change the back line combination that works for me. It was evident in the game when Chandimal threw that wild pass to no one. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
CR has a back line which are good with the ball in hand. To work with them , you need a fly half who distribute the ball. Not a one who kicks. This ill fated move must not have contributed too much to the defeat, but some thing CR think tank should look in to.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
CR did not look like the team that wanted a win on the board. I did not see the calmness or composure they showed in first four weeks even with defeat against Kandy. Kavindu dropped the ball at a crucial stage in the second half, which he should have finished the move by scoring. They never get the moves going or the continuity. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a torture as a CR fan witness that game. Havies dominated the forwards play, but if CR were smart and tactical, they could have finish this game as winners. But Havies got the deserving win. Just weathered all the pre season storm and just marching forward. Actually forwards do the marching while Sanath Martis would be smiling.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It does hurt when your team is loosing like this. Against Kandy I was gutted. I wanted them to come back hard next week. May be all we can do is just pray. After spending all the money, it is some what ridiculous to see this semi professional players can not get a line out functioning properly. Those are basic things that you would expect at this level. Yet, we are finding them lacking at big time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If any one in CR camp reading this, I would ask them to take a moment and think back. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'll stop this with one of the quotes Shanaka Amarasinha made some time back.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Money can not buy HEART" </div>
<br />

I wanted to write about Royal vs St' Joseph's game before this. But had butterflies in my stomach preventing it. Honestly thought if Joes to win it would be by very small margin and for Royal were to win by much bigger margin.<br />
Game ended with just 5 points difference. I believe score line does not tell the exact story how Royal dominated the game. You might not agree with me , but if you want to verify just watch the replay.<br />
<br />
It was a great game of rugby where simply showed why schools rugby is way ahead of club rugby in the country. Both sides played really well. Only unfortunate thing was referee Dinka Peries had a very bad day. Lets not talk about it since nothing will change from that.<br />
<br />
Coming back to the game I really like the way current and recent past Royal teams are playing. They know exactly what to do. What opposition will throw at them. They absorb pressure like sponge. Other teams should thank the game is only 70 minutes this year. Those 10 extra minutes would have been lethal.<br />
<br />
Royal knew the hype around the game and Joes started witth a bang. One of the best tries of the season , largely thanks to Piyathissa and former Science sensation Tharindu Maduranga. It looked like Joes in to some thing and will be a long evening for Royalists.<br />
<br />
This Royal team did not rattle. They were patient. Decided to shut the game for Joes. No wide ball. Keep it close, use it. Tire the opposition and sap the energy out of them. The result is hard earned victory.<br />
<br />
For those who has any doubt on Royal domination , just take the fact that Joes did not win a single line out. The only one they won was of a crooked throw that referee did not spot. At some stage they decided not to kick to touch from 50 meter mark of a penalty due to the pressure of line outs.<br />
<br />
It was too much hyped game in my opinion due to the fact that season is not even reached half way mark. There are other sides who are willing to make their mark in the league and people were trying to make the impression that this year is all about two hoarse race. I strongly disagree with that, since there are sides like Peters, Isipathana, Kingswood, Trinity,Wesley are trying there best to make their mark.<br />
<br />
I know it is dissaponting for Josephian fans , but you have to accept the fact that Royal know how to win games. They never seemed to be panicking. They just took the time, settled in, finished the business as usual.<br />
<br />
St Peters vs Isipathana<br />
<br />
Both teams were engaged in highly intense game which ended in poor crowd behavior again. Isipathana should take more responsibility controlling the crowd in my opinion. I wonder clear yellow/red card incident in the second half went without punishment due to crowd pressure. The peterites were unlucky in that situation. The game stood the anticipation level, but Peters should have scored more. I think that is the difference between Royal and Peters this year. This will be the game they wanted for sure, since they were tested and wily old fox Mr. Martis will plan his next moves now. Isipathana is young but will not be disheartened with the loss. They will try harder now.<br />
<br />
Darkhorses<br />
<br />
Kingswood is a side that people does not talk about in group 'A' this year. But watch out fro game against Joes on the 21st. They are just flying under the radar. They will be happy to do so, but I expect some strong performance from them in weeks to come.<br />
<br />
Bradby is around the corner and hoping for a clean game.<br />

Its a harsh word to say , but I have been keep saying this. " We deserve to loose games" . No matter how you can live in glorified past, it does not resolve your current issues.<br />
<br />
Against South Africa, knowing Angelo Mathews is not available we still opted to play just 3 bowlers and bits and pieces spinner plus Asela Gunarathna. Result was evident. Asela and Prasanna combined to give away 136 runs for no pressure at all. Then Imran Thahir ran through our middle order like knife through butter.<br />
<br />
Sri Lanka took Lakshan Sandakan on tour saying that he will be the X factor blah, blah. When Oval pitch was not clearly a run fest , they went ahead with Prasanna and what was the result? You all know.<br />
<br />
We know we don't have bowler capable of taking wickets in the middle overs. So then play the bowler who you believed to do that for you.<br />
<br />
I am not surprised if we bring Thisara at number 8 tomorrow, who is neither bowler or batsman. We are a stupid to that level who are not respecting basics of cricket. Take wickets you idiots, play four genuine bowlers. If your 7 batters can not win the game then pack your bags and come home.<br />
<br />
India game is just a mere procedure in this CT. We are bound for a good hammer in the hands of very good team , perhaps title contenders.<br />
<br />
Can not be patriotic always when its clear people who are responsible to make decisions make blunders.<br />
<br />
You don't deserve to win tomorrow Sri Lanka. So please don't even try!!!!!!!!!!!!<br />

On a perfect Saturday evening Royal managed to break hearts of double blues at their home. A game that promised to be a thriller stayed as it is providing spectators worth of their money.<br />
<br />
Coming in to this penultimate week Trinity, Isipathana, Royal and Wesley were in the title race. I honestly thought Wesley were true contenders to the title this season amid their early season drubbing in the hands of Trinity and the drama that followed.<br />
<br />
My opinion was both Royal and Wesley were neck to neck while Royal had a slight advantage. There were two major reasons for that. First one is Royal were playing at home and second is they are a 80 minute team.<br />
<br />
If you followed Royal through out the season , they managed to hang on playing full 80 minutes. As rugby pundits suspected it seemed like Wesley did not have the enough gas to last entire 80 minutes.<br />
<br />
Wesley started with a bang. As they promised they came with all guns firing, creeping mistakes in to Royal camp. Royal's golden boy of the season Janidu Dilshan made some uncharacteristic mistakes. The early penalties awarded were duly obliged by ever green Avishka Lee. The Lee brothers are a revelation for Wesley this season and you have to feel for them when they are end up in losing side.<br />
<br />
Royal gradually settled down, went in to the half time with trailing by 2 points , which I am sure they knew what to come. It was a hard fought victory and well deserved too. Now Royal will have a sigh of relief going to the coveted Bradby shield 1st leg where it will be the league decider.<br />
<br />
I wonder my heart can stand that pressure.<br />

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-574197538829807434.post-38150352986144105092017-03-26T19:30:00.000-07:002017-03-26T19:37:10.602-07:00Prize Royal failed to grab<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Woke up early at 4 AM here to watch what I thought would be a regular prize to grab, but end of the day proved otherwise. Evergreen Pathana boys once again proved that they are not going to go down with out a fight. In-fact they won the war.<br />
<br />
Last week I commented on Royal rugby page saying that if we ( Royal) play basic rugby that we know, we should win the game. But day ended in disappointing manner leaving me wondering what Royal were trying to do.<br />
<br />
There were two tries scored of ill passes , most noticeably the last try scored by Sumudu Rankothge which sealed the deal for Pathana. I am sure Sumudu scored much hard working tries to win games , but would take this piece of cake with out thinking twice on any given day.<br />
<br />
If you watched those two tries scored by Pathana, they were result of Royal trying to spread the ball wide in side their own 22 leading to fatal mistakes. Royal from the beginning looked to me like did not understood the equation properly. Only small passage in latter part of the first half, when Royal scored the second try was the only flash of play I liked that Royal should have played against this Pathana team.<br />
<br />
Its no magic if you watched the games so far during the season, that Pathan does not have the luxury of determined forwards they had last and year before. Royal just had to do the batter them, build phases and tire them out. Instead of that they tried to play expansive game much too often at times sending the ball wide in the first phase.<br />
<br />
I am not sure what was the thinking behind Royal coaching staff behind the tactic. One reason that I can come up with is that Royal trying to build up to Bradby. Yes , Trinity is playing different brand of rugby from other teams in the league, so may be Royal wanted to try adapt to fast open style of rugby before the big game.<br />
<br />
But what went begging was one of the high prizes of the season. Major Milroy Fernando trophy would have been still worth lot to be back in Reid avenue after lapse of 1 year.<br />
<br />
Still there were some good line breaks from Royal but I wonder whether it is unnatural for them at times. Best example was when Sabith Feroze whoo had a great game broke away from left flank in the latter part of the first half did not off load to Janidu Dilshan , other wise would have been a certain try. I do still remember last year Mahima Gamage was guilty of couple occasions , when he tried to score on his own with the try line just mere meters away. If he passed on those occasions may be it would have been a different season for Royal. Trust me when I say it.<br />
<br />
I think Royal should look at the one or two pages from the Pathana book. We think Pathana has naturally gifted players in the line. Yes,, it is true. But even this year if you watched the the tries Pathana scored , there were many tries that they scored as a team. They know when to pass. Royal know how to pass , but fail to identify when to pass.<br />
<br />
One thing you should admire about this Pathana teams lately is they always punch above their weight, which I think Royal neglected during the second half. Royal kept the habit of leaving things too much for the last quarter of the game and this time it bit them hard. It was a game Royal would and should have close out with going in to the half time 14 to 5 lead. The yellow card in the 70th minute was stupid and can not blame too much for the poor guy, because entire team was responsible for the defeat.<br />
<br />
I was wondering why full back Perera was kept playing even it was obvious he was going to make a mess of things. So many questions left to answer by Royal think tank. They survived Peterites who did play like head less chickens on the day , later found some sense and beat Patahana. A Dharamaraja side probably did not finish the business and Joes side perhaps was over confident coming in to the game.<br />
<br />
I expected much from Royal coming in too the season and even after 4 games when they still managed to hanging on to the games, but this was a mistake of a game. It was Royal game to loose I thought. They did it to perfection I think.<br />
<br />
Never take away the fight and courage shown by Pathana boys. They deserved to win this. They wanted it and just took it way. It does not matter how you score your try unless it is illegal. They keep punching above their weight. Probably as Shanaka Amarsinha said one time "money can not buy heart".<br />
<br />
Congratulations to Pathana!!!!<br />
<br />
Royal , take a deep breath boys, think through!!!!!!!!!!<br />

Finally we won a game. As I saw on social media and on many one to one chats , many were not that much pleased. There were talk about three missed boundaries given away by Afghans and etc.. But I would say we need to appreciate the victory and look forward.<br />
<br />
By all means it is a very good victory. Afghans are by no means are minnows now specially when it comes to T20 cricket. The gap can be minimum between full member side and minnow side in T20 simply because minnows has to concentrate only for 40 overs rather that 100 overs or longer version of the game. Even in life you can't judge a person by short period of time right? So guys we need to cut some slack for our boys.<br />
<br />
The victory is a very good one. Why I say that is we didn't look rattled like in UAE game in asia cup. We played the cricket the way we used to play except for Malinga yokers. Batting after some time looked pretty good , Angelo finally looked like hitting his form even with the late end cameo which is good.<br />
<br />
Bowling of course will come under much more pressure by looking at the big hitting ability of the other three teams which was shown so far, but then again look what Newzealand has done. They managed to win despite putting up below par totals against big hitting teams. If you believe in your self and do what you do best it won't be that much hard as you imagine. You have to feel for Kula of course since he gave away 43 runs in his quota and he bowled pretty bad last over. Still if Angelo held on to the catch of their top scorer rightly after Kula took the wicket , he would have had better figures.<br />
<br />
Fielding is worrying for sure. I don't think we can't do wonders in just few days. But except for dropped catches ground fielding was OK. If we held on to those we would have chase some thing around 120-130 which would look rather comfortable victory in the end. So boys That is why i am rephrasing it might look ugly but a very good bloody victory. So now we have to believe and support them.<br />
<br />
Batting seems to find its way. We did not panic except for Dilshan trying some reverse sweeps in the midway. He looked calm and composed and more importantly played chance less innings. If Chandi can keep his end and find few more boundaries we are good. Do not have to worry about Thiri since it was not the best pitch to come and start time the ball. Let him have some breathing space and he will come good.<br />
<br />
I am writing separate paragraph on Thisara's role. Never happy on him playing as the 4th bowler who is bound to give away 30 plus runs in his four overs day in day out. And sending him above Kapu only worked because Afghans could not afford to operate with a seamer in the middle of the innings which gave him a chance. It will not work for sure against other giants in the group. I was hoping If Malinga is fit he would be a straight swap to Thisara but now it is not the case. So play Thisara at 7 if you badly need him ( I don't know why) and play proper bowler at 8.<br />
<br />
So that's my bit on the game. Lets hope we pull some magic against "Gayle Storm" on Sunday.<br />
<br /></div>

it's not the best time to be Sri Lankan fan but then again it's the time you have to face reality. We are not doing good , honestly worse. So will write up my share just to let the frustration out. <br />
<br />
We are used to be a side who always flying under the radar and punch above their weight. Seems like its not going to happen any more. Today is the our first game against Afghans which by any means not going to be easy. They are a confident unit and smell the blood of wounded loin. So why not finish it off.<br />
<br />
More interestingly the match is between #8 and #9 ranked sides and if we can win this it should be enough for me. I expect nothing more at this stage. We have been bashing, cursing and bringing up various opinions on social media. At least that is all we have lefts to do.<br />
<br />
There are many reasons for our failing as they say and you can find even more. There are few things that comes to my mind.<br />
<br />
<b>We do not respect basic rules of the game </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Cricket or any other sport today has grown gradually and and unbelievably in terms of technique , skill , game management and many more. But basics remains the same.<br />
<br />
<i>Why do we play a game with 3 proper bowlers??</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
its very simple. Bat , bowl and field. So you have to bowl well and you need proper bowlers to bowl. How can you expect a side to bowl well with just 3 bowlers and some other part timers?? We keep picking <i>Thisara Perera </i>as our 4th bowler which is clearly failed over the time. You don't have to be a cricket genius to tell that <i>Thisara </i>neither a bowler or batter now.<br />
<br />
My point of argument is if you do not trust you batsmen, in which case you have the right to play 7 then forget about it. Play the best 7 you can find and give 4 proper bowlers a chance to restrict opposition to manageable score. Playing <i>Thisara </i>at #8 looks to me like you are removing one tyre of your car thinking now it will go faster since less friction from tyres with the road rather than trying to repair your engine. It does not work like that way. That's why I am getting furious at selectors and management. Respect the game if you want to win. Other wise you will be thrown out.<br />
<br />
There is more to write. Which I will in future.<br />
<br />
Good luck Sri Lanka</div>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: LKLUG;">If you
are a Kandy fan, it is not the best times of the year. Kandy going
down once again for the second successive year. Losing battles
upfront and most worryingly at their fortress. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Many
things looks like happening around Kandy rugby these days. They
sacked their coach. Rumors say that players were not happy with the

dominance?</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;"> </span>

<br />
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: LKLUG;">I
think Kandy going through a rough patch. Other teams have caught up
with them or some can say their level of playing has </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">deteriorated</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">
over time. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Why everybody talk about Kandy
this much? Trust me, its not only Kandy fans. Other rugby followers
are talking about Kandy's dip in form as well. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Simple
reason for it would be the fact that Kandy was the team kept local
club rugby kept going. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">It was a one horse
race for sure, but still they were the only team to watch, if you
wanted some quality rugby in display. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">That
may come too harsh for other teams (I am a CR fan). At times truth is

main reason for Kandy pattern of play is lack of confidence. If you
saw the Havies game, it was clearly evident. They didn't engage in
the game like they used to be when they were a champion </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">outfit.
</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">If you are a champion side and when you
have that mind set it is easy to pull up miracles. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Lets
take the best example of Aussies era under Ricky Ponting. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">In
his good old days team </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">A</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">ustralia

you remember some of the </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">victories they
pulled during that era, it was evident. Even when the opposition
doing good, they believed in them selves which opposition </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">didn't.
</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Thats what champion mentality can do for
you. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Now look at what happened during
latter part of Ponting's career. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">If you
remember the test South Africa pulled out a miracle chase in forth
innings, VVS Lakshman heroics to take India home in Mohali and
England last pair's rearguard in 2009 ashes. </span>

you are in champion mindset , you don't believe in defeat. Things pop
out from nowhere, when there is no hope. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Kandy

still they survived every challenge came their way. They didn't </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">have
any bad days at office. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Specially at

Sajith Mallikarachchi, Nalaka Weerakkody, Senaka Bandara and more.

aggressive. If they need an example, they can watch the replay of the
game against Havies. Watch what </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">things

was pure aggression mixed with </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">brilliant</span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">
play. </span><span style="font-family: LKLUG;">Kandy forwards were humiliated in

second round games. </span>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Even though the Kandy –
Havelocks game is done and dusted I thought about writing my bit.</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If a Kandy fan in mid
2000's went to some magic hibernate sleep and woke up in time for
witness last weeks game, I am sure he would go nuts or kill him
self. He would rather think that teams have changed their jersey
colors or some thing has terribly gone wrong. In fact Kandy rugby has
some loop holes now which are penetrated so badly by other teams. By
taking nothing away from Havies superb effort, its still below par
performance from a team which used to local rugby well over a decade
or so. Any way lets focus on teams separately now.</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Havelocks</span></b></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Compared to last week
Havies put up a great show. They were brilliant in all the aspects in
the game , except for place kicking. Havies were quick to identify
their weakness from last week. Which was obviously the 9/10
combination. They brought Mithun Hapugoda to starting line up as
scrum half and he delivered what team needed. I think that move sat
the game up for home team. They replaced Mithun with veteran Zulki
Hameed as much as early in the second half. Zulki was in thick of
things as well providing spark to Havies back line.</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Even though #9 provided
much needed support, Niroshan Fernando converted to a hero from a
villain last week. He had probably the game of the season and easily
outplayed his counterpart , who is none other than “country's best”
Fazil Marija. Niro played with confidence and it grew with the game.
His kicks to touch was excellent. As I watched closely, every time
Havies got a penalty, Niro kicked deep in to Kandy half which gave
torrid time for the visitors. Many people looked to have forgot what
Dhanushka Ranjan did. He tackled his foreign counterpart every time
and had a great game. Still he tries to go on his own at times , but
in the time to come he will come good at that as well.
</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If you think 9/10
combination was the thing that Havies came on top, its not true. As
far as the back line enjoyed a great evening, they should thank their
forwards for that. At the post match interview Muthuthatntri talked
about “aggression”. Thats what exactly they did. They were too
hot to handle and destroyed Kandy up front which laid the foundation
for the back. The scrummage and rolling mauls were treat to watch
while line outs were 100% perfect as in a dream.</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Kandy</span></b></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When
you loose its hard to identify what has exactly gone wrong, because
there are too many factors. I am not going to say Havies won because
of Kandy's weakness, but Kandy is not the side once they were. With
Andrew Porter injured within first few minutes of the game, forwards
looked flat and outplayed by Havies. Line outs were pathetic and they
were shy at the breakdowns.</span></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So
thats my bit on the game and if you missed the game, I recommend you
guys to watch the second half recorded video on <a href="http://www.thepapare.com/" target="_blank">papare</a>. Specially the
last try Havies scored was too brilliant to miss if you are a rugby
fan.</span></div>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Next week or rather this
weekend's game will be the most anticipated one for the rugby league.
Defending champions vs wounded lions I would say. So just thought of
writing down my views on it.
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This game should be a
thriller. I think there is no doubt about it. But I suspect will this
game live up to the expectation we have. Simply because of the fact
that Havies doesn't seem to be the same unit which we saw last year,
at least for me.
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Changes for Havelocks</b></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
As I said in my last post
it is evident for me , with the 9/10 combination it's going to be
tough for Havies. I respect and understand the fact that you cant
match the level of country's best halves combination (Roshan
Weeraratne and Fazil Marija). But there is a BIG “if” for that.
If other teams can carefully select their combination, they can make
it work. Navy showed exactly that during league. Their halves
combination of Suranga Pushpakumara and Chanaka Chandimal are hitting
it smoothly. Pushpe is quick, cunning and dynamic which makes him
good enough for the challenge while Chanaka Chandimal has shown his
class.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Halves Combination</b></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Havies are desperate for
a new halves combination I think. If they are not , they will have to
pay for it specially in the second round. I am not writing off Meedin
and Niroshan Fernado completely. Thing with Meedin is he is too slow,
lack creativity. He is always providing too static ball to his line
which is killing the game for Havies when they have likes of Sandun
Herath, Chamara Dabare and Mithun Hapugoda with foreign center. In
last game I didn't see any occasion Mohomad Sherif who is a fairly
good runner with the ball joining the line.
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Scrum Half</b></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I think Havies think tank
should bring in changes. But what options do they have? Last years
their substitute fly half Pushpakumara Perera is with Navy this year.
I saw him replacing Suranga Pushpakumara at Kandy game as scrum half
and played well. So Havies left with old soldier Zulki Hameed who
replaced Meedin in the latter part of Navy game. Zulki didn't look
too bad for me. He was willing to run with the ball, get tackled and
spotting few gaps at will. The question is is he fully fit or ready
to start a game. I really doubt that. I know Zulki gives 100% but ,
“has the time away from game got in to him?” Is the question I
got.
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Fly Half </b>
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I am
not going to say Havies should replace Niroshan Fernando from the
starting line up. He is a good player than that. But I think time
requires Havies to take some bold, dynamic decisions. The option that
looks to me is Dulaj Perera. He is a player I have watched with so
enthusiasm since his school days. Kid got coll head, great amount of
potential and a thinking fly half. He is not a kicking fly half, who
are not tend to kick every ball come there way. Simple argument I am
making is “if Rimzie Jamaldeen slotting in to #10 at CR so nicely,
why cant Dulaj for Havies?”. Anyway its up to Havies think tank to
bring on changes and make strategies for the game.</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Mid field </b>
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Last
week Danushka Ranjan started at outside. He is a wonder boy from
school days, but I yet to see him fitting to club level. He tried too
much on his own in last game, probably thinking that he can run
around defenses like he used to do in college days. I am not asking
him to be replaced, but bit more thinking and change strategies would
give him a world of good I guess. Finally Lee Keegal is with Navy
this year and I think it has done some impact on Havies mid field.
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Kandy</b>
</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I
think the loss at nittawela did world of good for Kandy. I am not a
Kandy fan , but I really like the way their coaching staff and
players took the defeat. They didn't hide any thing and gave a good
look at it and came back strong after that. They did the change
everyone wanted them to do by bringing Fazil Marija to his favored
position and suddenly Kandy line looks at its best with the likes of
Wilwara and Lavanga Perera. What is most wonderful is even Pradeep
Liyanage is sidelined due to a injury they are running circles around
opponent defenses. Only weakness that Havies will find in Kandy team
will be forward pack. But if Kandy play with the passion and hunger
they used to play with , I think they will break lot of Colombo fans
hearts and mine for sure.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: left;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Watched the last week big game, <i>Navy</i> vs <i>Havies</i>. I am
not going to talk about refereeing or atmosphere at Welisara which
are irrelevant factors for Havies loss. I saw various reasons on
social media by fans , but if you read them most were BS. Simply most
of them haven't watched the game and just pointing at many things.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First <i>Navy</i> try was a example of sheer foreign power. I was at
the perfect angle to view it. <i>Navy</i> outside center just
brutally brushed away Havies defenders who were shy to engage with
him. Then only they decided to confront him up and close and
throughout the game they handled <i>Navy</i> foreigners much better.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I you wonder why Navy won against both Kandy and Havies , answer is
plain simple. They were the more hungrier team which has perfect
appetite for win. They were well prepared and planned well , which
other teams didn't.</div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;"></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="text-decoration: none;">What
Havies did well?</b></div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;">
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Forwards. Led by Muthuthantri, Havies looked really dangerous forward
pack to me. Specially with the return of Shenal Dias they were the
best forward pack for me on that day. Having the guys like “lema”
Pathirana, Sharo Fernando who are giving more than 100% work rate,
they were better than their counter parts. I think return of Shenal
Dias has upgraded their quality while some tooth to it.</div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;"></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="text-decoration: none;">Weakness
and reason to loose</b></div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;">
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you followed Havies games this season, you would have noticed the
fact that they were given very anxious moment's by their opponents.
They won every other battle before , but I felt they didn't stamp
their authority like a champion team should do. What happened on
Saturday was exactly that.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Niroshan Fernando had a game to forget. The way he played reminded me
the match against Madagascar which he debut for Sri Lanka. He was
nervous and made blunders under pressure. While the game going on, a
guy behind me said what Niro is doing. He said “if he starts well ,
he continues do well. If he starts bad , then forget about it”.
Thats what exactly happened. Niro started nervously and continued to
do so. His kick was smothered by Navy attackers and crucial try was
scored. Again I was in a perfect view when that happened. Niro had
ample time to clear the ball, dummy , pass or what ever he wanted to
do. But he was slow and mad e a mess of it.</div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;"></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="text-decoration: none;">9/10
combination</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Havies 9/10 combination was awful and it where they lost the game for
me. Young Meedin is touch slow and too predictable in his play and
Niro didn't do too great either. So they made a perfect combination
for a loosing team. Havies lacked creativity in the mid field, killer
instinct thanks to that. If you compare other front runners , Kandy
have Roshan/Marija and Navy too with Suranga/Chandimal. Even CR got
lot of options at scrum half and Rimzie Jamaldeen doing realy well at
#10.</div>
<b style="text-decoration: none;"></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="text-decoration: none;">Discipline</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What ever game it is <span style="text-align: justify;">Discipline is a key.</span><span style="text-align: justify;"> if you are not , simple thing can take away the game from you. Sharo did exactly that after Havies successfully got the ball near their try line when Navy knocked on. He punched a player and gave away easy penalty to Navy , which was the first score of the second half with out any complaints. </span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><b style="font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none;"><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><b style="font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none;"><span style="text-align: left;">So those are my thoughts on game. In next article I will look at next
week's big game.</span></b></span></div>
